What have you forgotten?

What do you need to remember?

Life now is so full of distraction that when we talk about reconnecting with ourselves it's almost a cliché. Its become acceptable, the norm, its just how it is now.

“We do not remember days, we remember moments.” Cesare Pavese

We all love our gadgets, our devices and our social media networks. Once it was a weekly outing, then it was a daily thing, now it's an hourly exercise, even more for some. Our life is centered around our phone, we communicate via it, form relationships with it, do business with it and relax with it.

We need time to defuse, to contemplate. Just as in sleep our brains relax and give us dreams, so at some time in the day we need to disconnect, reconnect, and look around us.” Laurie Colwin

You could say it's our biggest distraction and our most productive tool, especially with business. Our phones are only a small part of the busyness of life. Our work consumes a large part of our life, then there is Netflix, TV etc. you get the picture so I won't go on.

“Social media demands a lot of us on top of our already demanding lives. So let's disconnect as we need to and renew our interest and ourselves.” Simon Mainwaring

We slowly forget the things we were passionate about, our hobbies, our sport and the dreams we had when we were younger. We write our New Year resolutions on a bit of paper at the start of the year and they are forgotten in the time it took to write them.

“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” Harriet Tubman

I want to know what do you need to remember about yourself? What is that hobby or the passion for art or sport you loved but stopped because life got in the way? I know you know what it is. What will it take to just remember how it made you feel? What about the satisfaction it gave you? What things do you remember about yourself at that time?

I have a few simple tips that have helped me.
  1.  Get in the zone. Watch movies or listen to music from that time and remember.
  2. Set goals on what you are getting back into with detailed actions that supports them. Write down why you must achieve them.
  3.  Schedule time for yourself in your calendar. That way you are not thinking of all the other things you think you should to be doing instead of focusing on the moment.

“The key to immortality is first living a life worth remembering.” Bruce Lee

You are never too old, too slow, too busy, too out of shape or beat down to start. Don’t let an event in your life shake things up, get out there and rattle that cage.

New years resolutions don’t work…..but goals do.

New years resolutions don’t work…..but goals do.

Wow its that time of the year everyone’s New Years resolutions are in full swing. Some people haven’t set any this year, others just a few and some just the one. Resolutions vary about as much as there are people on this amazing planet. The most popular ones are below according to www.statisticbrain.com we can all relate to a few of these that’s for sure.

“Many people look forward to the New Year for a new start on old habits.” Anonymous

1. Lose Weight
2. Getting Organized
3. Spend Less, Save More
4. Enjoy Life to the Fullest
5. Staying Fit and Healthy

7. Quit Smoking
8. Help Others in Their Dreams
9. Fall in Love
10. Spend More Time with Family

“One resolution I have made and try to keep, is this: To rise above the little things” John Burrows

Statistic brain says that of the 49% of people that have New Years resolutions only 8% succeed. That’s a staggeringly low amount, I don’t want to be all doom and gloom and put you off your resolutions so if you are disciplined and are already succeeding, keep going! You got this. For the rest of us there are GOALS. Powerful written GOALS.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Mark Twain.

Goal setting - writing down clearly defined goals. We are visual creatures and the power of having our goals written down is incredible. Why Goals and not resolutions you ask? Goals are structured with well thought out actions attached to a BIG WHY. Resolutions we either say them to our friends or partner and that’s the last we talk of them.

“What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.” Zig Ziglar

After researching all the greats (Jim Rohn, Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy, John Assaraf, Les Brown) for countless hours over the last two weeks on goal setting, something clicked that had been missing for me - goal achievement. It’s not just about setting goals, but how can we actually achieve them. I needed a few simple tools on achieving goals. So I put the below list together as a quick guide to get you thinking.

  • ·      Big reason why – You need this to inspire you.
  • ·      Create goals in these areas – Health, Wealth and Relationships
  • ·      Detailed action plan to achieve your goals
  • ·      Break goals down into daily, weekly, monthly and yearly timelines
  • ·      Replace old habits with new ones
  • ·      Do something, no matter how small everyday towards your goals
  • ·      Create a one pager and look at them everyday
  • ·      Visualize yourself achieving your goals
  • ·      Take more action – When in doubt don’t think, do one thing towards your goal
  • ·      BELIEVE

“People are not lazy. They simply have impotent goals - that is, goals that do not inspire them.” Tony Robbins

Please take the time to acknowledge yourself on all the achievements of last year; recognize the struggles, the triumphs, the sadness, the happiness, the doubt, the courage, the journey and the growth. No matter what, you are a better person in everyway as a result of the events of 2015.

2016 is your year, write it down, get it done, you got this! In the words of Les Brown “You have greatness within you”.

“Be always at War with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each New Year find you, a better person.” Benjamin Franklin
