How can you make it through the tough times?

How can you make it through the tough times?

I think back to when I was lying in hospital with bolts in my head and weights pulling to keep my spine straight, I wondered to myself how did I ever get through that.

At the time I had a shattered neck (yes those are my real X-rays) broken back, broken arm, crushed foot and half my calf muscle with third degree burns. I could not walk, I could not move for that matter. All I had was belief; I had an unshakable belief that I would walk out of hospital no matter what. I didn’t know how or how long it would take I just new.

“Mile by mile it’s a trial, yard by yard its hard but inch by inch it’s a cinch” - Unknown

Think of all you have overcome in your life - family issues, health issues and great loss. You have strength; you are a warrior and deserve to acknowledge yourself for this. Don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise, especially yourself. You are stronger than you could ever imagine.

“There is no better than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time.” - Malcolm X

The will always be tough times, life isn’t easy for anyone. It is a choice on how we react and cope with adversity that shapes who we are; it defines us and strengthens our character. Show empathy to those around you because you never know what they could be going through.

“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” - Helen Keller

When I look back at some of the trivial issues that have got me down or diverted me of my path I can’t help wonder why. Why did I let them affect me so much, at the time they seemed to be huge issues.

Ask yourself this question – Will this matter in a year from now? Don’t sweat the small stuff” – Richard Carlson.

Isn’t it time you started to give yourself some credit?

Isn’t it time you started to give yourself some credit?

Yes it is!

We all achieve so much in life. We do more than we realize we do; yet we rarely give ourselves credit. Not to mention we don’t take praise or credit from others that well.

“I'd like to congratulate myself, and thank myself, and give myself a big pat on the back.” Dee Dee Ramone

We punish ourselves for past mistakes but when we achieve a goal or a milestone we just move on to the next one.  We do this without truly taking the time to show gratitude and give ourselves a good old-fashioned pat on the back.

Pat on the back -
An expression or gesture of praise or approval.

Yes I am generalizing a little but we need to consciously be able to acknowledge all we have achieved and are achieving along the way. Don’t wait until you achieve your goal to recognize your achievements. Celebrate the successes along the way. Give yourself reference points for success at each step.

“Giving credit where credit is due is a very rewarding habit to form. Its rewards are inestimable.” Loretta Young

When others praise you don’t deflect it by saying things like “it was nothing” or “anyone could have done it”. You did it, no one else. Give the person who praised you a gift by saying “thank you for saying” or “thank you that means a lot I worked so hard on this”. You get the idea I know you have your own words.

“Maybe you don't see people looking at you because you aren't looking at them. Maybe you don't hear all the good things people say about you because you're too focused on the bad. Maybe you're a lot more wonderful, beautiful & special than you ever give yourself credit for.” Unknown

If you didn’t achieve what you set out to do today no problem, hit the reset button and go again as there is always tomorrow. You got this!

When are you going to start believing in yourself?

When are you going to start believing in yourself?

Right NOW.

When I was 19, the driver of the car I was in feel asleep and drove into a bridge. That day my life changed. I sustained serious (shattered neck, broken back, arm and 3 degree burns on my leg) injuries. Once I had recovered I continuously pushed my mind and body past the limits of my injuries and mental state. Risking everything again that I had nearly already lost. I had nothing to prove to anyone – well only myself.

“If I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.”― Mahatma Gandhi

I spent money, crazy amounts of money chasing what I already had inside me but could not see. I listened to everyone else tell me what I could or couldn’t do and the things I should do. I did course after course with no direction still searching for something. What was I searching for?………Belief. Belief in what I had already achieved and overcome.

Give yourself credit when you achieve something, its not luck, chance or the right place at the right time. Its all you, you did it, you achieved it and you deserve the credit for it.

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” ― Winston S. Churchill

Its not about money or success, its about letting go and believing who we are as people that is truly important. We all have a story but sometimes we need to take the time to reflect on all we have overcome to be where we are right now.

“Press on – nothing can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Perseverance and determination alone are omnipotent.” – Calvin Coolidge

If you are not where you would like to be, that’s ok as a mountain is climbed one step at a time. The only question to ask yourself is: What is the first step for me?
