The right time to do something is now!


You are going to get curve balls thrown at you no matter what so you might as well go after it anyway.

I was recently on a six-day trip to New Zealand testing one of my new experiences in the mountains. I took my photographer along to document our time there, we captured incredible photos for my website and social media. On the first day the plan was to hike to the first hut, drop off everything but the camera and safety gear, hike to the ridge, get photos then stay the night in the hut. The second day the plan was to hike to the second hut on top of the mountain to ensure it was an attainable goal for my clients, stay the night and get photos at sunrise.

The first day went as planned but when talking about the second day with the rangers they informed us that the weather forecast had changed and there was going to be 100km winds and rain after 3pm. I couldn’t believe it, the sole purpose of my journey was to hike up the mountain to ensure it was an achievable experience. My photographer had to do the long hike back and hitch hike out to get mobile phone service and get picked up a day early so the camera gear didn’t get wrecked.

I made the decision to go solo up the mountain then back all in one day to ensure it was a suitable track for my clients. I hiked the 20km up and down the steep rugged terrain for 7 hours without a break to beat the weather before it closed in. You do not want to be in the mountains in New Zealand when the weather turns bad. It was one of the hardest days of my life.  It made me realize that when something is important to you it doesn’t matter what the challenges or set backs are, you will find a way. You either find a way to succeed or find an excuse as to why you didn’t. I know which one feels better.

It is never going to be the right time to do anything, you are never going to have more resources, you will never be less busy, have less distractions or have more time. If you want to change your results you need to change your standards. You have everything you need right now, more than you ever give yourself credit for.

What do you do when self-doubt creeps in?




What do you do when self-doubt creeps in?

Have you ever done something great or were working towards a dream and you feel like things are going well but you start to second-guess yourself. Maybe you hit a roadblock you mind starts to race with all the worst-case scenarios.

“I have self-doubt. I have insecurity. I have fear of failure. I have nights when I show up at the arena and I'm like, 'My back hurts, my feet hurt, my knees hurt. I don't have it. I just want to chill.' We all have self-doubt. You don't deny it, but you also don't capitulate to it. You embrace it.” Kobe Bryant

There will always be highs and lows no matter how successful you become, no matter what stage of the journey you are on. Your ego is going to jump in at some stage and question every decision you make and second-guess all that hard work and effort you put into your dreams.

Self-doubt or self-talk is just that – Talk. These thoughts are just words and cannot hold you back. How you choose to react or deal with these thoughts will however have a profound affect on your ability to move forward and succeed.

“No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path” Buddha

We need to continually develop ourselves and change our mindset to become the person we need to be. Unless you change your thinking you will not change your situation. The next time these thoughts creep in acknowledge them and then say to yourself from the words of the great Les Brown “Its not over until I win”

Will belief get you through?

Will belief get you through?

Yes it will.

Years ago I went on a soul searching trip after I had knee surgery. My goal: sit on a deserted island for three weeks and heal. So I ended up on a beautiful island 17hrs in a leaky boat off the west coast of Sumatra. The anti malaria tablets were giving me the worst nightmares so I stopped taking them. Two and a half weeks later I got the most incredible fever.  Even in my minus 4 sleeping bag, I was still freezing. I needed a doctor badly I felt like I was dying, so they brought someone to see me that clearly wasn’t a doctor but the only word I could make out was malaria.

Cutting a very long story short, I travelled to Singapore to see a proper doctor.  After nearly two weeks of travel and not one minute of sleep I finally made it. I was hallucinating from fever and lack of sleep. The doctor I saw was amazing, she gave me antibiotics and something to help me sleep. She told me I didn’t have malaria but something had attacked my liver like malaria does. Relieved and medicated I slept for three days straight!

I think back how did I ever get through that. I had no reference point of how long I could last and how long it would take. Everything was totally unknown to me but I kept going and kept pushing.

“Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.” Gail Devers

When we have a vision for our lives or a dream we want to achieve often the only thing we have is belief. Other might people doubt our plan or can’t possibly understand what we are trying to achieve. This can throw us of course or lead to self-doubt and self talk. Push it all to one side and just keep going, immerse yourself in what you are on the path to achieving.  If something happens that causes you to doubt, just learn more, be more and be relentless.

The will be set backs, roadblocks and many doubters but as the great Les Brown says “Believe and you will achieve”.

Successful people get in line and stay in line

I used to go from one thing to the next, never truly committing to anything. I had the mindset that if it didn't work out it didn’t matter because I would always have a back up plan. Why do we question ourselves? Why do we put so much pressure on ourselves? How can we stay true and trust in ourselves when the going gets tough? Humans have a need for certainty and this can lead us oh so cleverly back to our comfort zone.

You cannot have a back up plan or an easy out if you want to succeed. Joe Pane said something powerful that truly spoke to my soul and had a profound effect on me, he said "you're either all in or you're all out, you will never achieve what you want if you just dip your toe in to the water" When something means everything to you don’t say “if I make it” instead say “it's only a matter of time before I achieve it”

Celebrate the small wins along the way and take note of the reference points of success. Talent will only get you so far; perseverance, hard word and being relentless in pursuit of your WHY, your Purpose and your vision will get you through.
